Captive of time
Stephen King: The Langoliers
American science fiction, 180 minutes, 1995
Unsuspecting passengers waiting for the departure of the night flight to Boston at the Los Angeles airport still think that they are facing an uneventful flight, but they are very wrong.
The machine is almost full. Ten passengers fall asleep immediately after take-off, then wake up halfway to find that the other people have disappeared from the plane, leaving only their watches, change, cigarette cases and dental fillings on the seats. The cockpit is also empty, the aircraft is set to robot control. Off-duty pilot Brian Engle takes over. Together with Nick Hopewell, the British knight of fortune, they reassure their companions. Brian decides that they will land at Bangor Airport, which has a long runway with little traffic, and is accessible from the ocean. After landing, they realize that the airport is deserted, the air is stale, and the food is tasteless. There is no sound, only Dinah, the blind girl, hears some sort of distant rumbling. Bob, the science fiction writer, explains that he thinks they experienced time travel during the flight, so they have now landed recently. Meanwhile, Craig Toomy, a man with a weak nerve, attacks the others, so they are forced to tie him up. Toomy then begins to tell them about the langoliers, imaginary creatures that his father used to scare him with when he was a child when he misbehaved. Now everyone can hear the increasingly loud rumble. Toomy claims it's the sound of the langoliers approaching inexorably. The murmur increases to a roar, and in the distance an army of terrible orbs appears. They swallow everything in their path with their gaping mouths.
